I Finally Found The Reason Why Programmers Always Work Overtime

Introduction: Working overtime is an eternal pain in the IT industry. When a project schedule is set, programmers often have to work overtime to ensure the progress of the project. Thus Programmers have no time to rest, let alone look for a girlfriend/boyfriend. Let's use a simple example to explain the cause of why programmers are always working overtime.

1.At the beginning, both A and B only need to eat ONE apple.

A and B can finish eating before going off duty. After a period of time...

2.The PM asks B to eat ONE more apple.

As a result, B also finishes eating two apples before going off duty.

3.The PM also gives A ONE more apple in order to show fairness.

Both A and B finish eating TWO apples before going off duty.

4.The PM thinks that B can eat another ONE more apple.

A finishes eating before going off duty. But B works overtime for a while to eat up the THREE apples.

5.The PM feels that B is more responsible as he works overtime to eat apples while A get off work on time. So he gives A another ONE more apple.

However, A still can finish eating before going off duty.

6.The PM feels that A is very capable and can be trusted, and gives A ONE apple again.

Both A and B have to work overtime for a while to eat up their own apples.

7.The PM feels that both A and B are responsible as they work overtime to eat the apples.

Now A eats FOUR apples everyday while B eats THREE. After a few days...

8.One day, the company makes a new policy and introduces a new routine business (ONE apple in this case).

For A has already eaten FOUR apples, the PM gives the apple to B. Now A and B each have FOUR apples to eat.

A  still works overtime for a while to eat up apples. B begins to stay after work for a longer time to eat apples.

9.The PM notices that both A and B have to work overtime but he does not want to spend extra money to hire anyone.

So both A and B have to work overtime everyday to eat up their own FOUR apples.

10.Finally, A is not happy, so he leaves the company. As the new comer C is not familiar with the business, he is asked only to eat TWO apples a day. The other two are given to B, so B eats SIX apples a day.

C finishes eating before going off duty, while B stays overtime until midnight to eat up the apples.

11.The PM feels that C can eat ONE more, so he transfers ONE of the SIX apples from B to C.

C finishes eating before going off duty, but B still stays overtime until midnight to eat up the apples.

12.It's back to the situation that they each have to eat FOUR apples everyday.

Now C begins to work overtime, and B still needs to stay overtime to eat up the apples.

13.B begins complaining about working overtime every day. C wonders why he needs to stay overtime after working for only a few days.

Both B and C have to work overtime to eat up their own FOUR apples.

14.Finally B can't stand it and leaves. D is hired to take the place of B. The PM asks D to eat FOUR apples a day with the same standard as B.

Both C and D work overtime to eat up their own FOUR apples.

15.C and D think that it's hard work as they have to work overtime though they have just hired not long. The staff work hard, so the company makes money and gets one more client (ONE more apple in this case). The PM gives the apple to C, because he has come for a longer time.

C and D both have to work overtime. And C stays even later than before.

16.C can't stand it anymore. Though C has just come not long, he has to work overtime, so he leaves.

The PM realizes that apples may be too many, so he hires one more person. E and F come and the apples are redistributed. Each person eats THREE apples a day.

Now D can finish eating before going off duty. Although E and F just come, they need to eat THREE apples. And they can barely finish eating.

17.The PM feels that more person means more business can be done, so he gives D ONE new apple.

D begins to work overtime again. E and F still finish eating before going off duty.

18.D feels tired, because though he is not familiar with the business, he has to eat FOUR apples. E and F don't understand anything, and D can't tell them why. Each of them is confused.

D works overtime to eat up apples. E and F still finish eating before going off duty.

19.The PM finds that E and F are off work on time every day. He thinks that they seem to be free and gives each ONE apple.

D, E and F all need to work overtime.

20.Each of them has to eat FOUR apples a day. The PM thinks the company is growing steadily.

The three people work overtime every day to finish eating apples.

21.As the company growing, of course there appears new ideas and new actions, and one day there comes another new policy (ONE apple) . The apple is given to E, perhaps because the PM thinks E is more suitable to eat the apple.

The three people all need to work overtime. And E stays even later.

22.The fact that D wants to leave influences E and finally E decides to follow. F wonders why the others leave so soon and begins to think about if there is any problem.

The three people decide to leave together after finishing eating this day's apples.

23.The PM isn't afraid of hiring people at all, as there are so many have no work. He thinks that eating apples is so simple that it should be highly replaceable. He immediately hires G, H, and I. All three of them are newcomers, so they have no choice but to pick up their predecessors' apples.

G, H, and I can't understand that why they are just newcomers but have to eat so many apples. Among them, H can't take so much pressure and immediately leaves the company.

24.The PM has to hire another person, J.

G is very good at eating apples. Although he is also new, he can finish eating before going off duty, leaving J and I eating apples.

25.The PM is so happy that he finally finds a talented person. He thinks so highly of G that he gives him ONE more apple.

G is really very excellent and still finishes eating before going off duty. J and I have to stay overtime to eat hard.

26.The PM thinks that as J and I becoming familiar with the apples, they should be able to finish eating the apples like G, and furthermore G can teach J and I.

G finishes eating before going off duty. J and I still have to stay overtime to eat up apples.

27.The PM thinks that G is so strong, and transfers ONE apple from J to G.

G begins to stay overtime to eat up apples. J and I still have to work overtime.

28.G complains to the PM that SIX apples are too many. The PM is afraid of G's leaving, so he passes ONE of G's apples to I.

G finishes eating before going off duty. J and I still need to work overtime to eat up apples, and I stays even later.

29.I works overtime every day from the day he comes, and his apples becomes more.

The company boss gets ONE new apple, but this time it is a rotten apple. The PM doesn’t want to take it, but he can't say no, so he decides to throw it to the most talented one, G.

G doesn't want to eat but still accepts, and he works hard to finish eating. J and I still have to work overtime.

30.G is so talented that he is hired by other company immediately. The PM can't persuade G to stay, so he has to hire another person K to instead of G.

It's hapless for K to have to eat the rotten apple as soon as he comes, and he can't eat it up at all. Now K, J, I three all need to work overtime.

31.The boss gets another rotten apple again. Still the PM has no choice but accept it. This time he throws the rotten apple to J.

J isn't happy. K is a newbie and not clear about the situation. And I is the luckiest among the three one.

32.The rotten apple becomes the last straw to overwhelm J. After J leaves the company,  L comes.

I becomes the most 'senior' one and tells K and L about the past, and L is scared. The three all have to stay overtime everyday.

33.History repeats itself...

I is not familiar with the apples but has to eat so many.

K complains about having not finished eating the previous apples but having to eat the new ones immediately.

L eats hard, for when he asks I and K, neither of them can answer his questions.

The three people all cannot stand anymore. They all leave!

34.The PM decides to hire more person and immediately find four people, all of whom are new so the apples are redistributed.

Everyone has to eat FOUR apples everyday. However, the problem is that there are rotten apples and the four people are not familiar with the business yet.

The final fate is the endless vicious circle...
